The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism

Education architects and Urbanists in the fields of construction, urbanisation and land management
                         to create a better living and working environment for all .

The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism's mission is to provide knowledge and professional practice pertaining to architectural and urban development project studies. The curriculum covers the fields of history construction, and management. A special emphasis is given to the study of khmer ancient architecture and vernacular architecture.

Through their professors's guidance and instrucation, students have the channce to strengthen their capacities and expand their own horizons to become qualified archictects. The faculty also ensures that students are conversant in aesthetics of traditional Khmer architecture and national identity in construcation, residences and city planning.

Curiculum
The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism offers a 5.5 year Bachelor Degree program(11 Semesters, 144 credites).

  • Level One or Foundation Year:

    The first year is comprised of general foundation courses required to all RUFA students

  • Level Two:

    The Second year consists focuses on Khmer art history and Khmer architecture, including traditional ornamentaion. Students are taught general concepts, in particular drawing, descriptive geometry, and material construction, as well as methodology of architectural projects. Design techniques are developed during a weekly(8 hour) architectural poject workshop, which continues through Level Three.and Level Four. An English language training program is also integrated into Level Two.

  • Level Three:

    In addition ot the weekly workshop, topics such as techniques of construction, strength of materials and structures are taught. Students practice model making and learn how to use AutoCAD software. Planning and landscape architecure are introduced, with an emphasis on urban projects.

  • Level Four:

    The main area of study in Level 4 is urbanism, including related economic issues. Technical fields such as GIS(Geographical Information System), construction and sewage systems are also covered Professional practice is enhanced during the final year of the architecural project workshop

  • Level Five:

    This year is dedicated to the relisation of student diploma projects that demonstrate their research skills and design techqiques. Students graduate after presentation and evaluation of their final project .

Field Study Trips
A field training program is an integral part of student learning. Undergraduates examine historical sites, ancient temples and classical buildings to research history, practice their measuring and drawing skills, review practical construction characteristics and increase their overall practical khowledge. Study tours to exdamine varied topics such as traditional Khmer hoursing and vermacular architecture are also organized.

Education, Orientation and Job Opportunities

Students enroll at RUFA to study architecture and urbanism for both practical and theoretical purposes. Since 1989 reopening of the faculty, 595 students were graduated. They work in diverse positions in the private and public sector. In a country renowned for its historic and modern architecture, there is a high interest and demand for architects RUFA graduates employ their skills in a variety of roles, including research of ancient architecture for conservation organisations, designing buildings, and creating master plans for a rapidly developing nation .
